Dear Shipmates:

Summer is in full swing and the Club is buzzing. The Fourth of July party will soon be here so get your reservations in early

We still have some slip bidding going on so here we go. Slip B-3 9 ft 10 in was given to Mike Wetherall, Slip H-3 14 ft. 1 in was given to Charly Lodico and Slip S-10 was given to Tom Lithen.   Slips that are up for bid are C-1 and D-1 both have 9 ft 8 in beams slips C-2 C-3 D-2 D-3 D-5 all have 11 ft beams F-8 has a12 ft 4 in beam.

Guys as we all know the price of fuel, electric and just about everything else has sky rocketed so I am asking all our members to try to conserve on electric. If you are not on your boat turn off the heavy duty appliances this will help offset the high cost of electric, every little bit helps thanks.

See you all around the Club

FLEET CAPTAIN                 Bob Steele

 Skippers,
As I write this report we are preparing for our Cruise (on Saturday, June 28th.) to Short
Beach for a Club Breakfast & BBQ.
I have received a lot of feedback from our membership and it looks like this will be a well attended event. We are praying to the Sun Gods for fair weather.
Our next Club Cruise will be to the Shrewsbury Yacht Club, N.J. We will be leaving on Saturday, July 12th and returning on Monday July 14th. The only expenses for this Cruise will be fuel and whatever food you bring. We have arranged for berthing at this club at no cost.
So, mark your calendars, check you charts and come and join us for a great time.

                Bob Steel - Fleet Captain

DIGITAL SELECTIVE CALLING
What it is and how it can save your life in an emergency?

Digital Selective Calling (DSC) is a mandatory feature on all VHF
radios produced in 1999.

In an emergency when this feature is activated, the radio will send a signal (on channel 70) to all vessels and land stations which have an active DSC radio. The signal will contain a MMSI number which is exclusive to the vessel in distress. If the VHF radio is also connected to a GPS the Latitude and Longitude will also be broadcast.
Here is how to put this valuable piece of safety equipment to work for you:
       (1) Make sure your radio is DSC equipped. DSC radios have a Red cover on the face of the radio covering the DSC button.
       (2) Obtain a MMSI Number (this is the ID number assigned to your radio) FREE by going to the Boat US or Power Squadron websites.
       (3) Enter the MMSI number into your VHF radio and your good to go. If your VHF radio is connected to your GPS, all the better.

In an emergency (Mayday situation) remove the Red cover from the radio, PRESS AND HOLD the DSC button for five (5) seconds.
The DSC signal will be transmitted containing your MMSI number and if connected to your GPS, your Latitude and Longitude location.
Does it work, well here's my story.
On 31-May-2008 while on patrol with the Coast Guard Auxiliary near Watch Hill, Fire Island, our vessel received a DSC Call.

We recorded the MMSI Number and notified Fire Island Coast Guard Station. The DSC signal was transmitted by a sailboat taking on water, out at sea off Fire Island. Six (6)passengers on that sailboat were located and rescued. The sailboat sank.
Think about it........
